Ain't Nothing Like The Real Thing
That funny smelling stuff in your radiator does much, much more than just prevent freezing in cold weather. It's a fascinating and complex product which, when mixed with the right proportion of distilled water will: lower your engine cooling system's freezing point to -34? F, raise the system's boiling point to 265? F, prevent corrosion of the various metals contained in the system, reduce corrosion due to cavitation and electrolytic voltages, and minimize water pump seal wear.
This stuff won't last forever. Over time, the corrosion inhibitors brake down. Rust scale will develop inside the narrow passages, eventually clogging them. And silicates (used in most antifreezes) degrade and begin to gel, further restricting proper circulation. As the coolant ages, acids develop, which eat away at the inside of the system, causing coolant leaks. So a periodic "drain and fill" is very important, and will ensure reliable and economical cooling system performance.
A 50/50 mixture of this product and distilled water is required. Your owner's manual will tell you the right amount for your Lexus. Just dumping a gallon in the radiator, then topping off with water, will most likely be too much or too little for your vehicle.
Lexus recommends a "Long Life" product that is non-silicate. Silicate products are abundant and inexpensive, but can damage water pump seals due to the silicate's abrasive properties.
